Did you know canes used to be a fashion accessory and status symbol? Antique appraiser Gary Germer joined us to share an interesting collection. In the 18th and 19th centuries, they were a gentleman's fashion accessory and status symbol — and some had secrets, hiding swords, flasks, and corkscrews! They can be an affordable thing to collect, and they don't take up your whole house.
Different materials actually told a story about the owner:
- Gold, lapis, ebony — wealth
- Shark vertebrae — exotic traveler
- Elk horn — hunter or outdoorsman
- Carved wood — tradesman or woodworker
- Spyglass handle — ship captain or engineer
